XP-47J. The ultimate Thunderbolt, nicknamed Superman. 200 pounds lighter, P&W R-2800-57 with force-cooled fan, larger supercharger, reached 504 mph in level flight, first piston-powered aircraft ever to break 500 mph. It’s a big bird.

Nice! That Scorpion is bad ass. How you you like to be the front stickman in that baby? Too bad we can’t see the pilot’s expression, I’ll bet he’s smiling.

The P-47J. Wonder what year that was produced? The ph oto plane still has the razorback and greenhouse canopy vs. the blown bubble.  Another bad ass.

The s/n on the P-47J says 1943. The bubble canopy first appears on the D model, with the s/n of 1942. Not sure why it’s a razorback. It was a new build, and not a conversion. Notice how they notched the razorback to improve rearward viz.

Cool. Wonder why it never made production. Likely fuel consumption.

The Bf 109 being fueled by the English lorry...I’ll bet that’s in the Channel Islands, which the Germans occupied for a while.  A hint is the low Telephone number on the door.

Though the 47J was stupid fast, the 47D was getting the job done as it was (Republic did build 160 P-47Ms that had the same P&W R-2800 engine as the J, and they were sent to England to chase down the V-1s). Republic instead focused on another development of the P-47, the XP-72, which was to be an interceptor. But the Army wanted escorts with long range, so that too was canceled after only 2 were built. But the XP-72 was also stupid fast, with a max speed of 490 mph. It woul d have made one hell of a race plane.

Also, I didn’t even connect on the English on the side the fuel truck.

I was very confused for a while. The truck is clearly British but the crew seem to be from elsewhere.

Interweb is Wonderful. Bf 109E-4 of JG 40 in July 1940 at La Villiaze Airfield in Guernsey, Channel Islands. The lorry is a 1939 Commer. The 109 was the aircraft of Hauptmann Wilhelm Meyerweissflog JG 40's Admin. Officer, who was shot down over England. He attracted some attention when it was discovered that his age: 50 and the fact that his “raid” over England was sort of freelance.
